Naval combat? Yes.
Fan service? Yes… and about 3 minutes (uncensored) nudity in bath with a positive message???
I went into this series blind without the game knowledge but an understanding of it being a naval battle IP with fan service. It starts with tropelike but able mystery, and with a large cast that just keeps growing. The atmosphere during larger skirmishes felt like a modern historical war (WW2) and the Siren bring in the mixture of modern warfare.
Some of the more prominent characters get some growth as if you dig a little you find some messages about life, friendship and resolve, as well as touching upon the same philosophy as Fallouts “war never changes” but don't expect anything profound.
It might not really offer much for non-game fans. There is a moderate amount of fan service (cleavage, panty shots and such), little nudity by bath scene, but mostly war-like downtime and few decent naval-like magical girl combat with a tropey story.

I'd only recommend this anime towards fans of the game or for those who enjoy CGDCT. It's a cute anime, and mainly marketed towards those days where you just want to chillax.

Azur Lane is a mobile game adaption of an alien force invading society with advanced technology and only females are able to defend off the aliens. This is a knockoff of Strike Witches. Not having any prior knowledge to this franchise... besides the eye candy, there isn't much here. For fans of this franchise.

Of course top notch fan service, so so many girls - all types, sizes, curves, shapes, palette & personality too
Impressed at how creatively designed they are at incorporating the ship armaments & parts. Sweet! Cute! Erotic! Some borderline illegal! Too crowded cast though left character dev wanting.
Plot is a nice balance of slice-of-life, some plotting and big big battles. Though is rather simplistically straightforward.
Prod quality is great where is matters, bumpy elsewhere. Lots of big battles but nothing too elaborated to be worthy of highlight.
IMO overall this is a success for the franchise. For fans of the games, its good supplement. For those looking for ship waifus, or fan services. Easy to watch, nothing to really dislike and lots to be gained. 7/10. Btw game is nice & generous

As someone who plays the game everyday since its day 1 launch in 2018, collected 98.8% of the ship girls, and never spent any money for gacha rolls, I have some comments after watching all 12 episodes.
The story is pretty bad because the audience is kept in the dark both in the game and in the anime. Most (90%) of the anime plot and dialogue foreshadows things that will be revealed probably 10-30 episodes after this season ends. The anime storyline is as vague as the game's. Whoever the hell invented the storyine for the game and whoever adapted it to anime is utter crap. All the energy went into creating 400+ ship girl designs.
Probably not surprising that the storyline is crap since being creative is the NOT the strong suit of China (the people who made the game and storyline), a country that stifles freedom and by association, creativity. Yes I am Chinese, no I am not Taiwanese, yes I am Canadian.
With so many characters being crammed into the show it is tough to develop any empathy, character definition, or character growth. So quantitties over qualatitties. However that is the a positive aspect. You have an excuse for seeing tons of fan service. Azur Lane the Anime shows accurate portrayals of the girls just like in the game, minus some shortcuts in animation. Outside of the anime's main cast of ship girls, portrayals of the 400+ other ship girls are one dimensional archetypes shown for a split second or a one-liner in dialogue.
If the show stuck with 100% fanservice or 100% serious hardcore storyline it would be good, but they compromised and did 50/50. Such a goddamn shame too. They are correctng this with Azur Lane: Bisoku Zenshin! as a Type B slice-of-life Moe Moe cutesy anime with cute girls doing cute things.
Watch this with low expectations. If you play the game it makes watching it more enjoyable since you have a framework in your mind already and know what these girls act like, freeing more of your mind to make sense of what the hell they are all yammering on about. At the same time you will hate their rendition of the game into an Anime.
